After years of refining a civic process in which the public is informed, consultants are empowered, and nobody can quite identify the moment a decision became inevitable, Medford has emerged as Big Tech’s ideal downtown partner.

MEDFORD—A nationwide search for the American city most deserving of a mega data center has reportedly ended where all great infrastructure decisions do: downtown Medford.

Judges cited the City Council’s innovative approach to transparency. Residents may inspect the process at any time, provided they can determine which process is occurring, who has authority, what has been negotiated, and whether the important meeting already happened.

Medford also excels at the central requirement of modern megaproject recruitment: asymmetrical power. On one side stands a global corporation with lawyers, engineers, tax strategists, power-market expertise, and the ability to leave. On the other stands a community asked to feel lucky before it has been told the price. This arrangement is known as a partnership.

Agency will remain with the people through public-comment periods conducted after the practical choices have narrowed to yes, yes with incentives, and please stop asking about water. Accountability to the public will be shared among the Council, staff, consultants, developer, utility, and a future task force—ensuring no single party is burdened with enough of it to interfere.

With abundant civic urgency, a downtown in need of salvation, and no agreed public test for whether the project leaves the community better than it found it, Medford is checking every box Big Tech could want.
